Re: Naval Survivor's Certificate - Andrew J Gillman

Posted

Good Morning – I have my grandson on my lap as I am at the computer. He is 28 months old. I have attached a couple of pictures that were taken at Christmas.

I think this would be Mary. According to my records only two children survived from the children of Andrew and Mary – Henry and Mary E. I see the birthday for Mary is different that what we had previously noted. It is interesting that with her married name we can begin to search for the family line for her also.

I have not done any additional looking for them yet – but plan to after the holidays.

Have a special new years celebration this year.

Couple of questions….
On page 47 and 48 Mrs William Carleton writes the letter about George
wasting GGrandfathers pension. She says she is the only child from his
first marriage. Who is she? His list of children shows Henry the
oldest child. Did he not list her and what is her first name? Do you know?
Very interesting

Kathy – I forgot about this last year and when you mentioned it – I remembered what you were speaking about. It is heart breaking what happened, but heart lifting knowing the new life that has come from the tragedy.

I have uploaded the entire file. It is 90MB is size so it cannot be sent via email. You can download the file by clicking on this link: www.hannigangenealogy.us/gillman/navy.zip – if given the option, select save to your computer.

My grandchildren just returned tonight and I need to give them some attention. They will be leaving by Sunday to return to Kansas City – but we need to enjoy every moment that we can.

Have a wonderful new year.

This is great, can’t wait to see it all.
So sorry I haven’t replied to anything this past year, it’s been so busy
having an infant again full time. He will be a year old on Wed and we
must make it a happy day but losing his mother is still so raw. She and
the lord saved his life before she left us so he must have an important
mission in life.
Have a great New Year

Hope you had a blessed Christmas celebration. I am a little excited today because I came across a 107 page file last night in the Naval Survivor’s Certificate database for Andrew J Gillman. I am still in the process of downloading the images but here is the information regarding the database:

Publication Number: M1469
Publication Title: Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Civil War and Later Navy Veterans (Navy Survivors’ Certificates), 1861-1910
Content Source: NARA
Date: 1861-1910
Veteran Surname: Gillman
Veteran Given Name: Andrew J
Certificate Number: 16785
Fiche Number: 16047

Once I have downloaded all the document pages I will put them together in a ZIP file and forward them to you. I think this is a tremendous find as it provides considerable information in his own handwriting. Many of the pages are the reverse sides of documents that only include the stamp showing the date they were received by the Pension Department but when connected to the applicable page provides a historical document.

It does provide additional information such as birthdate of all children, date of death of Mary /Brady/ Gillman (February 8, 1877), date/place of marriage for Catherine (Kate) Teresa Cullinane, and other information. There is a document that shows that he enlisted into the US Navy for service on the USS North Carolina and Supply ship on August 19, 1862 and served on the USS North Carolina until August 23, 1862. He was discharged from service on August 18, 1863.

I have attached some of the pages that I find most interesting that have information provided by him.

Hope you had a blessed Christmas celebration. My grandchildren were here for Christmas before going south to see Melissa’s family. They should return later today and we will have the grandchildren for New Year’s Eve. They return to Kansas City next Sunday.
